JavaScript Course Update

Using Promise.all for Concurrent Operations

This week, we introduced a new lesson and exercise on Promise.all to teach learners how to manage concurrent asynchronous operations in their code. Using a real-world example of loading a user dashboard, the lesson highlights how Promise.all makes sure that all tasks succeed together while preserving the order of results, making it an ideal method for handling interdependent operations.

To reinforce this concept, we introduced a new exercise that challenges learners to plan an event by concurrently fetching guest lists, catering details, and venue availability.

After adding a lesson on Promise.all, we realised that this exercise presented an excellent opportunity to demonstrate its real-world application. We have improved the solution code to use Promise.all for better handling multiple asynchronous tasks and made corresponding updates to the problem statement.

We made several improvements to the Football Time exercise, including adding a new task to the problem statement, fixing a minor bug in the solution code, and refining the styling for a better visual output.

Sagar Anadkat shared feedback regarding improvements in the solution code for the CSS Exercises for Font Family and Specific Font. We have addressed these issues and updated the exercises.

We also received feedback regarding the use of the CSS concept Flex in the HTML exercise for the figure element, which had not been introduced at that stage. To address this, we updated the exercise to make sure the learner is not required to use flex in the code.

Bring in the New Year with a fun coding challenge.

We have created a New Year Special Exercise where learners need to use their JavaScript skills to reveal a hidden celebration message.

This exercise is a good way to practice DOM manipulation and event handling while adding some festive cheer to your coding journey.

JavaScript Course Update

This week, we revisited two important lessons, Callback Hell and Chaining Promises, to improve clarity and better explain the concepts with relatable real-world scenarios.

Callback Hell

We rewrote this lesson to introduce a practical use case for multiple callbacks in asynchronous operations. Using the Apollo 11 mission as inspiration, the lesson then illustrates how deeply nested callbacks, commonly referred to as callback hell, can make code challenging to read and maintain. By emphasizing this issue, learners gain a clear understanding of the limitations of callbacks and the need for a better solution.

Replacing Callback Hell with Promise Chaining

Building on the Apollo 11 example, this lesson refactors the callback-based code to use promise chaining to show how promises simplify nested logic, making the code more readable and maintainable.

Challenges are Now Exercises

To keep our content structure simple and use a term that feels more familiar, we have transitioned from using Challenges to Exercises.

Moving forward, our courses will feature two types of content: Lessons and Exercises. Lessons will introduce key concepts, while Exercises test you on the same to reinforce your learning.

This update has already been implemented in our HTML, CSS, and JavaScript courses, with updates for React and Ruby courses coming soon.

HTML Course Update

We have updated our HTML Course challenges to provide the solutions alongside. This change comes directly from the learner feedback, where we noticed that many queries stemmed from minor issues like missing text or spelling errors, rather than HTML coding mistakes. These errors often left learners confused and unable to progress.

With this update, learners can now view the solutions to all HTML assessments.

Now when a learner clicks on the View Diff button which appears after the first time you run the code, a modal opens up displaying a comparison of their code and the correct solution. Differences are highlighted and marked in red and green, as shown in the screenshot below, making it easier to pinpoint discrepancies between your code and the correct solution.

We have added a new Canvas Animation chapter with 7 lessons and a challenge. These lessons guide learners step by step through creating smooth animations using the canvas element, covering concepts like requestAnimationFrame, clearing the canvas, and basic animation logic.

JavaScript Course Update

This week, we added 8 lessons, 1 challenge, and improved an existing one for better clarity.

Three new lessons and a challenge were added to help learners understand the key differences between nodes, elements, and DOM collections. Understanding the return types of various DOM methods is important to choosing the right one for a specific use case.

Fathan Alam highlighted a confusing section in an Images and Links Assessment, which caused an incorrect solution on his part. Based on this feedback, we have updated the content for better clarity. Sagar Anadkat highlighted a couple of issues in our HTML lessons, including a non-functional source and poster URLs in the Attributes of Video lesson and a typo in the Nav element lesson. We have addressed both these issues and updated the lessons accordingly.

Based on the feedback from learners in our workshop, we identified common blind spots when working with APIs, ranging from a general understanding of APIs to handling `response.json()` and managing errors. To address these gaps, we have added three new lessons and improved two existing ones in the API chapter.

Confluence 2024 - Rajagiri School of Engineering & Technology

We attended the “Future of Education” roundtable discussion held as part of Confluence 2024 at Rajagiri School of Engineering & Technology. Academicians from institutions like IIT Madras, CUSAT, MACE, MITS, and RSET, along with professionals from industries such as IBM, EY, NEST, and Unique World Robotics participated in the event. The discussion provided valuable insights, and we had the opportunity to share our initiatives to teach coding better through BigBinary Academy. We look forward to expanding BigBinary Academy’s reach to more learners through the partnerships established during the event.

New Batch Update

We have added a new batch of students from MGM College of Engineering, Nanded. We had around 62 submissions in the NeetoForm. We will conduct an initial qualifier soon and look forward to kicking off a new batch.

We have introduced a new project, QuizIt, to deepen your Ruby on Rails and ReactJS skills. QuizIt is a quiz application where you will build a fully functional platform with features like a searchable admin dashboard, quiz creation tools, and submission tracking.

JavaScript Course Update

Based on a recent learner query, we have added a new lesson and challenge on the role of console.log() in debugging. We noticed learners often got stuck in projects because they hadn’t logged variable values to check if they had the expected values.

This new lesson shows how console.log() can help track values and troubleshoot code, making it an essential development tool. Check out the lesson and the challenge.

Ruby on Rails Course Update

Project Update

The Currency Converter project is currently the first project in which learners submit a form and interact with an API. To better prepare them for this, we decided to introduce a simpler project before tackling the Currency Converter. This new project helps learners focus solely on form submission, so by the time they reach the Currency Converter, they can concentrate on learning how to work with APIs.

To achieve this, we’ve added the Event Invitation Creator project.

In this project, you can input event details such as the name, date, time, location, and description. After submitting, these details will be displayed as a styled event invite card. By working on this project, learners can improve their form submission skills before moving on to more complex tasks.

We have made the tasks in our To-Do List and Shopping Cart projects more detailed, breaking them down into smaller steps. This makes it easier to focus on each part as you work through the projects.

We have also introduced a new Calculator project, where you will build a calculator with basic functions: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

CSS Course Update

This week, we added more examples for the flex-grow property. Learners have always expressed a need for more practice for flex-grow in our workshops. Next, we added a lesson showing a practical use for flex-direction and another lesson showing a practical use of the rem unit. Practical use cases help learners gain clarify why any property should be studied in the first place.

HTML and Python Course Updates

We have added a lesson and a challenge on the benefits of using divs in your HTML layout. Note that a lesson about using divs for styling your CSS already exists in our CSS course.

JavaScript Course Update

This week, we added introductory lessons in a new chapter on canvas in our JavaScript course. We will slowly expand on this in the coming weeks. We want to help learners build more visual stuff with JavaScript. The canvas chapter is our first step in this direction. Check it out!

We have also added a fresh new chess board project. This is a design project which asks learners to style a chess board. Learners are constrained to use CSS Grid in the project. This will provide good practice for CSS Grid. Take a look!

After our initial call with them, 100+ folks from Viswajyothi College have shown interest in joining our workshop. We welcome all of them. These are third-year Computer Science students. In one of our lessons, we show an example in the JavaScript console for selecting elements using their class names. Aditya Bikram Jena showed us that we had missed adding some of the essential class names in the lesson. It was indeed the case! We have improved the lesson this week. Take a look!

Some of our learners also pointed out that our HTML DOM Manipulation chapters contained a few references to Node objects. Some time back, we had removed the chapters on Node, but the references to these chapters remained in some other lessons. We have now removed all references to Node.

This didn’t match the table header titles. We have made the change now.

Batch Update

The MGM College of Engineering, Nanded learners are in the QA Automation Engineering Training Program. They have been with us for over a month now. They have finished our HTML and CSS course and have progressed to learning JavaScript.

Shrikanth pointed out that two chapters in our Learn Ruby course had the same title. Both these chapters were about hashes. One was an introduction to hashes and the other chapter covered more advanced concepts. We have renamed one of these chapters to distinguish between the two. Thanks Shrikanth!

Added a new Batch

We welcome a new batch of third-year B. Tech. students from IIIT, Bhubaneshwar, to the workshop. We welcome all the 68 learners who are joining the BigBinary Academy Workshop. They would be spending 8+ hours daily working on BigBinary Academy. We look forward to working with them.

Community Feedback

Ajmal Shan identified that one of our exercises used a function in the accompanying code. This wasn’t correct, as the function concept hadn’t been covered in the previous lessons. This concept comes later, so we changed the exercise to not use a function anymore. Some of our learners highlighted that in some Ruby exercises, the question code doesn’t ask to put things in the console, whereas the solution needs it. We have started updating this in our Ruby course. Take a look!

This week we have updated our Regular Expressions Chapter with more concepts. There is a lesson on global modifier and another on matching one or more character occurrences. Take a look!

We have also added a new project. We want to add more logic based projects in our programming courses. In this series, we feel Tic-Tac-Toe is an ideal start.

Some of our learners going through the Ruby course highlighted that to the to_i method was explained in two different places in the course. In this case, we removed the second instance. You can read about the to_i method in this lesson now. Ajmal pointed out that the example code in another Ruby lesson had an error which we have now removed. Thanks everyone!

JavaScript Course Update

This week, we have added more lessons to our Regular Expressions chapter. First of all, we added lessons and exercises to help you match digits in your pattern. Next, we added lessons on regular expression range matching. Range operations help us to specify a range of characters or numbers to match within a pattern. Let’s use this knowledge to create some patterns for finding correct phone numbers.

Community Feedback

Christo Saju highlighted that one of our instructional videos had a broken link. Since it was anyway an old video which wasn’t really needed anymore, we removed the link altogether. One of our learners identified that the Python exercise wasn’t properly working. We have improved the exercise and it should work now. Thanks to everyone!

CSS Course Update

This week, we have added a new lesson on margin collapse. The lesson serves as a good introduction to the concept of padding. While styling your table, when the vertical margin doesn’t help you add more space at the top, padding makes more sense. We added this lesson to help learners have a smoother transition from margin to padding. We have also updated the lesson on padding to add more practical uses for it. Take a look!

The folks from GEC highlighted that one of our exercises had a question and solution code mismatch. The question asked students to add asterisks, whereas the solution wanted underscores. We have updated the exercise based on the feedback.
